The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the right of the people to bear arms and was adopted on December 15, 1791, as part of the first ten amendments located in the Bill of Rights. Since then there have been many attempts to create stricter gun control legislation and this leads to the argument whether or not this is an attack on the 2nd Amendment? The Bill of Rights amendments adds to the Constitution specific guarantees of personal freedoms and rights. The Second Amendment was originally based on the right to keep and bear arms in English common law and was heavily influenced by Sir William Blackstone. According to Gun Control Laws, â€Å"Gun control laws seek to limit the extent to which citizens can keep and own firearms, and often place limits on who can own firearms.† This would be directly affecting the Second Amendment and the right to own a gun and keep firearms. Another example of an idea in trying to restrict gun control laws says, â€Å"Proponents of these laws argue that gun control laws are necessary to reduce gun-related crime and protect the police and the public from the dangers inherent in the pr oliferation of guns† (Gun Control Laws). This act of trying to restrict gun ownership would be considered stricter gun control legislation and a direct attack on the 2nd Amendment. This is a complicated issue and both sides are firm on their perspective and gun owners will not give in and have the second amendment taken away from them. A Broader Perspective of Gun Control states, â€Å"the polarization of Americans regarding the control of firearms has evolved into a complex social and political conundrum that evokes emotional reaction among individuals and groups.† During the election season, this topic is always brought up and constantly debated. A major court case that went to the supreme court was Columbia v. Heller.
